Why the Sunday Night Dread is Not Something You Just Have to Live With

It starts around 5pm. A quiet unease that creeps in before you have even finished your Sunday. By evening it has settled into something heavier; a low level dread about tomorrow, about the week ahead, about going back. You tell yourself it is normal. That everyone feels this way. That this is just what having a job looks like.

But what if it is not?

Sunday night dread is one of the most common experiences amongst ambitious women and one of the most dismissed. We have collectively normalised it to the point where it barely registers as a problem anymore. It is just the price of having a career.

But here is what that normalisation is costing you. Your Sunday, the one day that should feel most like yours, is being hijacked by work before the week has even started. Your rest is not restful. Your weekend does not fully belong to you. And by the time Monday arrives you are already depleted before the day begins.

That is not sustainable. And it is not inevitable.

Sunday night dread is your nervous system sending you a very clear signal. It is telling you that work has taken up so much space in your life that it no longer stays within its designated hours. It bleeds into your evenings, your weekends and your sense of self until there is no clean separation between you and your job.

Psychologically this happens when work has become more than a place you go and a thing you do. When your identity, your worth and your sense of safety have become tied to your professional life your nervous system treats any threat to that as a genuine threat. And Monday, with all its demands and expectations, feels like exactly that.

The dread is not about Monday. It is about a relationship with work that has gone out of balance. One where work takes everything and gives back very little of you.

Addressing Sunday night dread is not about finding better ways to cope with it. It is about addressing the root cause, your relationship with work itself.

That starts with some honest questions. When did work start following you home? What would it feel like to close your laptop on Friday and genuinely not think about work until Monday morning? What would Sunday look like if it truly belonged to you?

From there it is about building the boundaries, the beliefs and the practices that allow you to separate yourself from your work. To know, in your body, not just your head, that you are more than your job. That your worth does not live in your productivity. That Monday is just a day, not a verdict.

Reclaiming your Sundays starts with reclaiming yourself. And that is exactly the work the From Within Programme is designed to support.

If Sunday evenings feel more like the start of your working week than the end of your weekend, you do not have to keep living that way.
