Who Are You Beyond Your Job Title?

It is one of the first questions we ask when we meet someone new. What do you do? And without even realising it, we have reduced ourselves, and each other, to a job title. A function. A role.

But who are you beyond that? And when did you last stop long enough to find out?

For many ambitious women, the answer to that question is uncomfortable. Because somewhere between the career building, the climbing and the proving, the answer got lost.

You know what you do. You know your job description, your responsibilities and your professional achievements. But strip all of that away and the question becomes surprisingly difficult to answer.

Who are you when the laptop is closed? What do you love that has nothing to do with achievement? What fills you up when nobody is watching and nothing is expected of you?

If those questions feel unfamiliar or if the silence that follows them feels unsettling you are not alone. And it is not something to be ashamed of. It is something to pay attention to.

When we allow our identity to become entirely fused with our job, something important happens. Our sense of self becomes conditional. It rises and falls with our performance, our productivity and our professional status.

A good day at work feels like personal validation. A difficult day feels like a personal failure. A period of change or uncertainty at work does not just feel professionally uncomfortable, it feels like an existential threat.

This is not a character flaw. It is what happens when identity and job title become the same thing. And it is one of the most common experiences I hear from the women I work with.

The good news is that it can change. Because your identity, your real identity, was always there. It did not disappear. It just got buried under the busyness, the expectations and the relentless pace of a career that slowly took up all the space.

Reconnecting with who you are beyond your job title is not a dramatic process. It is a gentle, curious and often deeply moving one.

It starts with asking the question and sitting with the discomfort of not immediately having the answer. What do I actually value? Not what my job values, not what my industry rewards, but what do I genuinely care about?

It continues with small acts of reclamation. Doing something purely because you enjoy it. Protecting time that belongs to you and nobody else. Noticing what energises you and what depletes you and letting that information guide your choices.

And it deepens through the inner work, exploring the beliefs, patterns and stories that have kept your identity tied to your output, and choosing something different.

Who are you beyond your job title? The answer is waiting for you. And it is more extraordinary than you might think.

If this question has been sitting with you or if you are ready to start finding the answer; I would love to talk.
